Biography

Welcome!

Once apon a time there was a young girl who had a tall and handsome best friend with whom she could share everything, her dreams, goals and wardrobe choices. But life happens, and they drifted apart, moving to different cities, experiencing new things. Fortunately, life brought them together again, and their friendship proved it had withstood the test of time. As they reconnected, he told the girl that he was finally coming out, much to her surprise (she had a broken gaydar, and still does).

By this time the girl had grown up to be an average woman with a fabulous shoe collection, living with a boyfriend and two cats. That girl is me, the Fruitfly. Although by then I had already had a wide circle of gay friends, that one friend was for all purposes my first gay friend. He set the ball rolling and forever made me the Fruitfly.

Its no surprise that one day it was brought to my attention that I had very few female friends. Scratch that. I had almost no female friends. After a detailed examination of my Rolodex, I realized that… good grief! They were right. The large majority of my friends were gay males. It made sense that most of my friends quite often refer to me as a “gay male trapped inside a female body” and that my boyfriend always says that at any party I will most definitely always end up making friends with the one gay male there.

As I pondered this, I realized that the reason I had so many gay friends was because I had met all of them through other gay males – a snowball effect if you will – most of whom had dated or were dating. Holy pink flamingo! I thought - I have more material on dating in the gay world than most people get in a lifetime.

Thanks to shows like “Sex in the City” and “Will and Grace”, gay characters and their stories have slowly been making their way into mainstream pop-culture and entertainment. However, stories which center primarily on gay protagonists are sadly lacking. How many romantic comedies in Hollywood feature gay men as the main characters? And don’t say “Brokeback Mountain”. That wasn’t a romantic comedy.

For this reason I decided to share my stories. Don’t worry about remembering all the character’s names and characteristics. That’s really not the main point. I hope that from reading my stories, you will be entertained, maybe laugh and cry a little and, in the best case scenario, relate to them. However, if you do want to keep up with the characters, I recommend you access the Fruitfly’s Glossary. It’s indispensable for keeping track of who’s who.

I will be adding a new story weekly. Although we all deserve our 15 minutes of fame, for obvious purposes I have changed people’s names and characteristics, as well as changed times, dates, and locations, and I present these stories as fiction based (very loosely) on reality.

Being gay is hard… and there is a lot of love, lust and friendship to keep us warm.

Huggles!
